An Ambitious Start to 2012…

‘Ambition’ is the title of our new 2012 Calendar, for which we asked our trusty network of designers and illustrators to provide us with an image for each month of the year that sums up the word for them. The results are both eclectic and uplifting, so please email abi@skewstudio.com to receive your free copy.

Stuff we like

  • Genius + Jeans = Jeanius

Bread & Butter Berlin’s biggest collaboration was Andy Warhol by Pepe Jeans. Using Warhol’s pop prints as inspiration, Pepe Jeans have created a fun ‘60s vibe collection for men and women with large-scale repeats and colour blocked photo tees of Warhol himself.

  • Printed Matter

Mavi held a printing workshop at Bread & Butter to show off their creative process in the creation of denim and prints. Anyone could take part and get their hands dirty printing their own tee with the help of the crew, and we thought it was a great way to get people interacting with the brand.

  • A Positive Message

Found over at the Retrogasm blog is this brilliant message proclaimed via a beautiful bit of typography. We’re also quite partial to the script’s border, which is frilly in the sort of graphic way suggestive of wall tiles.

  • Nice Ice Baby

Hilfiger Denim went above and beyond any of the show stands at Bread & Butter Berlin last week, installing their own ice rink at Templehof in order for their models models to glide around and show off the new season’s collections. Our verdict? The icy brights in the colour palette worked perfectly in the reflective surroundings.

  • Striking a Chord

Today’s post is of an image of a piano – an image we’re sharing for no other reason that we simply like it. It’s still and it’s peaceful – no tickling of ivories going on here! Shared over at Flickr by Jacobo Zanella Zanella.

  • Bread & Butter Winter 2012

Last week, Skew was at Bread & Butter Berlin getting all inspired by the collections for Autumn/Winter 2012/13. Held at Templehof Airport, the show’s motto this year was ‘High Fidelity: Prepare For a Strong Winter’, and in terms of scale and products to view, it was overwhelming. But we took great pleasure in jumping right in, taking hundreds of photos – and our fair share of freebies, too! Over the next few days, we’ll provide a snapshot of our experience via the Skew blog, so stay tuned…

  • Do Knit Disturb

The knitting trend continues to explode – this time, all over a hotel room! Conceived and executed for Brighton’s Hotel Pelirocco by local artist Kate Jenkins, this is the world’s only room where it’s not just the bedspread that’s woolly and warm – the walls, curtains, lamp, telephone and even toothbrush are all of yarn.

  • Friends of Foes

These super-cute Japanese-style toys from Kidrobot are a visual play on doom. The pairings look sweet together, but one element of each is destined to be the downfall of the other – a coffee cup to a donut, a grater to a wedge of cheese. Our advice to these couplings would be the old adage: if you love something, set it free!

  • Neck Lace

Garland necklaces have a long association with tropical holidays and grass skirts. But it turns out they can be the realm of colder climes and wet weather – if the flora and fauna are created in crochet! Once again, Etsy blows us away as a source of inspiring crafters and designers, who push the boundaries of the expected to come up with beautiful new ideas.

  • Scrap Books

We’re gutted to have missed Francisca Prieto’s ‘UNBOUND’ show at London’s jaggedart, gallery, which Design Sponge gushed about recently. Prieto’s folded paper art makes stunning work of old, torn, unloved books and other paper paraphernalia, and surprises lie within every careful crease. They also remind us of the fortune teller games we used to make up and play as kids!
